Mike Grell’s intent to model Bond after Hoagy Carmichael, in keeping with the vision of Ian Fleming, is most evident in this cover.

Just as the photographic posters for Licence to Kill were a major step down from the painted promotional materials used for The Living Daylights, the cover of this film adaptation pales in comparison to the cover artwork on Permission to Die.

Dynamite Comics has been publishing these comics and spinoffs since 2015 and making a wonderful contribution to the world of Bond! For collectors, Dynamite publishes a plethora of alternate covers in various styles for individual issues, all of which are great works of Bond art and worthy of admiration. Out of respect for Dynamite’s business and in the interest of simplicity, I’ve chosen to only feature covers to the collected editions of various story arcs or the first issue of ongoing series that have yet to be collected.
As always, I encourage you to seek out back issues from comic shops and collectors everywhere and support the publication of more Bond comics!

These publications are often overlooked on lists of Bond comic books but they really shouldn’t be. The issues on the Bond actors feature some really nice, high contrast black and white double page spreads by Delmo Walters Jr., and the Ian Fleming comic takes the post-modern approach of having the created meet his creator.
Bond scholar Charles Helfenstein’s Spies Comics also published a George Lazenby issue featuring artwork by Delmo Walters Jr., but sadly I’ve yet to attain a copy of this nor have I found any high quality images of said publication.

This image has truly taken on a life of its own, leading many to assume that this image was part of a pitch by longtime Batman artist Aparo for a James Bond series to be published by DC Comics. Sadly, that does not appear to have been the case, though considering the many iconic images that Aparo has drawn of the Dark Knight, I’m sure Batman fans are glad that Aparo’s talents were not further divided.
The James Bond 007 Adventure Storybook series are hybrids of children’s books and comic books, written in prose but illustrated in graphic novel style layouts. In addition, they feature work by longtime comic creators like Roger McKenzie, John Albano, Nestor Redondo, and Rudy Nebres, among others.
Although two books were published and distributed, another two books were created but only published as galley proofs — Operation: Big Brain and Target: 007. If anyone has access to these books, please contact me above!
